CALLE SOL - Nigel Gavus

Towards the end of 2022, Nigel Gavus, the independant Austrian filmmaker came to stay in Santa Maria La Ribera with his old friend, Matthew Phipps. He would end up staying a month and this film “Calle Sol” would be born. Nigel dusted off Matthew’s old super 8 camera and followed him around the streets of Santa Maria and the center of Mexico City as he took his street pictures and interacted with his friends around the city. Constanzo Romero, the painter and musician, scored the film on top of his roof with two impromptu guitar compositions. The resulting film was premiered at the book presentation at Centro De La Imagen for Matthew’s book “EVERY DAY IS BABYLON”.

Matthew walks an average of 16 km (10 mi) a day, taking many pictures as he weaves in and out of the chaotic peacefulness that is Mexico City. He never leaves home without his camera and is always ready for when the decisive moment strikes. This film documents his relationship to his adopted home and his new friends that inhabit his immediate world.
